SUBURBAN COMMERCIAL CENTERS RETROFIT

Lee County, FL

Seth Harry and Associates, Inc., working for a local government updating their comprehensive plan, developed a series of redevelopment possibilities for a number of 'place types', typical urban and suburban environments found in the study area. The redevelopment of a typical suburban strip neighborhood commercial center and a typical country crossroads were two of the place types which redevelopment strategies were shown.

The suburban strip center redevelopment takes advantage of an angular street network to create a neighborhood green fronting on a school. Mixed-use buildings with commercial space front the arterial and green, while attached townhouses and apartments scale down the buildings to the existing single-family detached neighborhoods.

The introduction of a town green and small commercial center form the heart of the country crossroads place type. Single family homes are located closer together in the town center, but quickly transition to the larger lot homes typically found in the area.
